Money and spirituality are typically viewed as conflicting ideas. A person that is considered spiritual is not typically someone who is money motivated.
Why? Because money is commonly associated with greed and materialism, while spirituality is seen as the opposite.
A spiritual person shouldn’t care about money, possessions, or obtaining financial prosperity, right? This may be a popular view for many, but I believe it is inherently wrong.
Ego is the Enemy Not Money
Money and spirituality go together. Ego and spirituality do not.
The problem is that people associate money with ego because that is how Hollywood and the media have portrayed it to be. Music videos, celebrity Instagram posts, movies, and more all demonstrate ego and materialism.
It is construed that a rich person must live a lavish life and have luxurious things. If a person does not take extravagant vacations and own the trendiest items, they are not rich. At least, that is what they want you to believe.
Spending money only to show off is an act driven by one’s ego. It is a misuse of money that’s propelled by society’s desire to look successful. The problem is not money. The problem is the vanity and narcissism that is prevalent in our culture.
Common Myths About Money
Those born into working- and middle-class families are usually taught to believe these myths about money:
- Money is bad, and you should not want it in excess.
- Money is the root of all evil.
- Rich people are immoral and make things worse for others.
- Saving money instead of consuming means you are cheap.
- If you pursue wealth, you are a greedy person.
- A wealthy person should give their money to others even if they have not earned it.
- Most rich people were born rich.
- Working hard for money is a waste of time.
This list can go on and on.
These beliefs mostly come from individuals who don’t believe in hard work and envy those who are successful. Having these feelings about money are detrimental to one’s financial success.
There are several great books that can help change your mindset about money. Living a successful, happy, and wealthy life starts with your frame of mind.
Spirituality is About Abundance
Abundance is simply having more of something. Spirituality is about nourishing your spirit and building an abundance of joy, love, strength, inner awareness, and gratitude.
As one seeks to gain more spirituality and better themselves, it makes perfect sense to build wealth. Money is a vehicle that allows us to live the lifestyle we desire. Living the life we want to live, boosts our happiness and well-being.
There is no doubt that spiritual growth aligns with financial growth.
The universe rewards those who work hard and express gratitude. While being grateful for what we have, we open the doors to abundance. Expanding your spirituality coincides with expanding your overall wealth.
Spirituality is About Freedom
Man’s greatest desire is to be free. Spiritual freedom and financial freedom are the paradigms of living your best life.
Spiritual freedom is being able to deal with whatever life throws at you. A spiritually free person is in harmony with themselves and the world. They do not live in fear, they forgive, they think positively, and they accept reality.
Financial freedom is the ability to deal with whatever life throws at you financially. You are released from the shackles of impoverishment. A financially free person can do whatever they want without worrying about money.
Money without spirituality is a recipe for depression, materialism, and emptiness.
Money and Spirituality Improves Lives
Improving your finances and obtaining more wealth allows more positive possibilities in your life. Opening your mind and getting in touch with the spiritual world does the same. By doing both, you can drastically improve your lifestyle and overall well-being.
Money is a tool we can use to improve our lives while improving the lives of others.
Think about all of the wonderful things that have been created due to money: humanitarian aid projects, scientific discoveries, technological advances, medical innovations, and more. The desire to help humankind while being financially rewarded is a combination that creates a better world.
Becoming wealthy is as simple as finding a solution to a problem. Solving problems makes life better for everyone.
We needed to travel faster and further than a horse could take us, so Henry Ford solved this problem by bringing the automobile to the masses. Society needed to store perishable food without it going to waste, so William C. Durant created the Frigidaire company and mass-produced refrigerators.
Prior to capitalism the way people amassed great wealth was by looting, plundering and enslaving their fellow man. Capitalism made it possible to become wealthy by serving your fellow man.Walter E. Williams
Don’t Fall Prey to Societies Stereotypes
Stereotypes hinder us and prevent us from being our true selves. Being a motivated accumulator of wealth does not mean you can’t be a spiritual person. Connecting with the universe, god, or a higher being should not be looked down upon.
Those that chose to pursue wealth are often thought of as greedy and superficial people. By now, you should know that is untrue. While some people may live up to the stereotype, the majority do not.
Successful investors, traders, business owners, and other wealthy individuals are often very spiritual beings. Many will preach mediation, gratitude, philanthropy, and more.
Becoming a better person mentally, physically, financially, and spiritually are all connected.
Money itself is neutral. It can be used for good or bad things. It can be used in more spiritual ways than not.
Humans have a natural tendency to focus more on negative experiences. Mainstream media knows this, and it why the news is always dramatized and concentrated on the bad things in life. They will rarely highlight the spiritual ways that money can be used.
If you are a good person with good values, money will strengthen your ability to do good. Strive to become wealthy and enhance your life and the lives of others.
