Society tends to only focus on the highlight reels of exceedingly successful people. It’s easy to look at their accomplishments and think they’re lucky or their success was handed to them.
However, becoming wealthy is usually an extremely difficult and challenging task. Those that have made it, have a long timeline of struggle and perseverance hidden behind their achievements. Successful people have learned that the things they do every day compound over time. By creating good daily habits, it makes it easier for you to reach your goals.
What Do Successful People Do Every Day That Most People Don’t?
The average person won’t commit to doing the things on this list because it doesn’t result in immediate gratification. They would rather waste time searching for an instant quick fix or a get rich fast shortcut. You must understand that hard work done every day, over time, is the true path to prosperity, and most shortcuts are like unicorns.
When you think about what you can do to become wealthy or successful, you should think about what you can do right now. That’s how it begins, by acting now and doing it again and again until you attain success.
This list might surprise you because none of these tasks are inherently difficult. What makes them challenging is doing them consistently every day.
1. They Plan Their Day the Night Before
If you want to be more productive and get extra things done, you should learn the art of planning. Planning your day the night before ensures you’ll accomplish what needs to get done. Take 15 to 20 minutes every night and build a roadmap for tomorrow. This not only helps structure your day and keep you productive but will also help to reduce stress.
Life doesn’t always go as planned but making a daily schedule helps to keep you on track. When you make the plan, think about realistic tasks that you need to get done the next day. It will prevent you from getting overwhelmed and you can focus on knocking them out one at a time.
You may notice how much easier things are when you plan for them. It’ll help you get more things done because your focus will remain on your plan instead of irrelevant distractions.
2. They Work on the Most Difficult Tasks First
A successful person will tackle the most difficult tasks first, while most people will regularly put them off. Avoiding hard work is a learned habit, one that can be detrimental to your success. When you confront the most difficult matters first, it boosts your self-confidence and builds momentum.
The boost you get from completing a challenging assignment will make everything else you have to do seem easy. And you’ll be more willing to get extra things done when they seem easy. You’ll be less stressed and won’t have to worry about how hard it’s going to be because you already finished.
So, when you are planning your day the night before, you should put the most difficult tasks first on your agenda.
3. They Establish a Morning Routine
What you do in the morning can resonate with how the rest of your day will go. Establishing a healthy and productive morning routine will give you a fresh start to your day. It’s obvious why successful entrepreneurs, business people, traders and more follow a strict morning routine.
Some common morning habits that you can incorporate into your morning routine are:
- Wake up early. Get out of bed with plenty of time before you need to get to work, school, etc.
- Eat a healthy breakfast. Depending on your diet plan, this can range from a protein-rich meal to a light serving of fresh fruit and toast.
- Avoid rushing to social media. It’s a common habit for people to go directly to their phones right in the morning. Resist the urge to check social media and stare at your phone first thing in the morning.
- Read. Read a chapter or more in the morning to get your mental juices flowing.
- Exercise. The morning is a great time to get your body moving. Starting the day with exercise will help boost your energy and motivation for the rest of the day.
There is no perfect morning routine that fits every person. Depending on your sleep patterns, work schedule and exercise habits; what works for you, may not work for everyone else. Just keep in mind that it’s important to wake up with enough time each morning so you can accomplish more than the average joe.
4. They Think Positively
A positive mindset is an important part of being a successful person. Every day you will need to work on how you deal with things and what you tell yourself. Thinking positive means you are looking at the glass half full, and finding ways to make the best out of every situation.
What you think and believe has a huge impact on your life. Controlling your thoughts and emotions takes a lot of practice. You need to recognize when you are dwelling on something you shouldn’t or thinking negatively about an unfortunate situation instead of learning from it.
If you have a conversation with a successful person, you’ll notice how they have almost nothing negative to say. They’ve taught themselves to focus on the good and to keep themselves from being irrational. Having a discussion with a person with a poor or negative mindset will paint a different story.
5. They Take Their Health Seriously
It’s essential to eat healthy and exercise regularly. Diet and exercise are not just about your image, it affects how you feel and how much energy you have. Successful people recognize that if they eat unhealthy foods and don’t take care of their health, it will diminish their productivity.
Everyone wants to be happy and feel good about themselves. Making the effort to eat healthy and exercise often will not only make you feel better and boost your energy but will increase your life span. Living a long healthy and happy life is near impossible if you don’t take care of your self.
What you eat and how often you move should be taken seriously on a daily basis. Find an exercise and diet plan that fits your needs and keep at it. Over time it will become a natural process of your daily routine.
6. They Stay Organized
A successful person is an organized person. They have order in their life that allows them to stay productive and keep them from getting overwhelmed. If you are unorganized, you’ll often misplace things, feel anxious and let important matters fall through the cracks.
Everything has a place. You don’t want to waste hours trying to find lost items or documents. Keeping your home and work area clean and organized every day will save you time. Trying to be productive in a pile of clutter or without a schedule is counterintuitive and will eventually hinder your success.
Implement a system that helps you stay organized. Clean as you go, put items back where they belong after each use and don’t get lazy. Creating a defined schedule of your daily tasks will help coordinate your day and keep you punctual. Successful people have it together because they take the time to stay organized every day.
7. They Read
It’s well known that a lot of wealthy and successful people spend their leisure time reading. Bill Gates reads around 50 books a year, Elon Musk is a known bookworm and Mark Cuban reads over 3 hours a day. This is just a few examples, Warren Buffett can be another one.
Reading is much more stimulating and better for you than watching television or looking at memes on your phone. Each book can unlock a new way of thinking, a new or better way of doing something and much more.
Books help increase your vocabulary, and reading is proven to sharpen your cognitive ability. So yeah, reading does increase your intelligence and above all, its fun.
Think back to your days in elementary school, teachers would encourage you to read as much as possible. It’s a well-recognized way of learning and improving your life. Non-fiction books offer more than most fantasy novels, but both are still good to consume.
8. They Network
There is a lot of truth in the saying “it’s all about who you know.” Successful people realize this and make sure they network with other people that can provide opportunities and encouragement. Developing strong relationships with positive and successful individuals is a vital aspect of pursing prosperity that’s often overlooked.
Networking with successful people can be very difficult depending on how you were brought up, where you were brought up and what class you were born into. This is because the opportunities to meet these people don’t typically fall into your lap. You will need to create the opportunities yourself. Reach out via social media, spark conversations with higher-ups at work, at the gym, or branch out within your family or friends.
Networking is not all about finding the right people to converse with. You should also know how to interact with others and make yourself likable. This is something you can work on everyday by reading books and forcing yourself to interact with colleagues, friends and even strangers.
There are a lot of methods in the art of conversation but a key one to remember is to make the other person feel heard and focus on being an active listener.
9. They Get Enough Sleep
Despite being told you should be waking up extra early every day it’s even more important that you get enough sleep. How many hours of sleep you should get is a controversial topic that can easily spark a debate. Most doctors will say 7-9 hours is recommended, but you should really sleep according to what works best for you.
Elon Musk and Richard Branson have both reported they get around 6 hours every night which could be too little for most people.
Sleeping less than 5 hours a night is commonly agreed to be detrimental to your health and productivity. Oversleeping can also lead to adverse health effects and prolonged grogginess or lethargy.
You will need to experiment and find the right number of hours for you. Once you find a happy medium, you should be able to get well rested every night and still have plenty of time during the day to get things done.
10. They Don’t Waste Time
Keeping busy and staying aligned with your goals is a fundamental part of being successful. Time is your most important asset. You can never get it back once it’s gone, no matter how rich you are. Making good use of your time every day will generate the most results while pursuing success.
You need to identify your timewasters and focus on how you spend your day. Many common wastes of time include: watching TV, procrastinating, oversleeping, playing video games, drinking, socializing and overusing social media.
Another huge waste of time can be overthinking and worrying about things that are out of your control. Being stuck in your own mind trying to convince yourself why or why not you should do something isn’t a good use of your time.
On the flip side, not giving yourself enough time to think things over is also counterintuitive. Prioritize your duties and practice time-management every single day.
11. They Don’t Fear Failure
The fear of failure will stop people from even trying. Dealing with failure can make many people throw in the towel for good. However, successful people are not afraid of failure, they know that it’s sometimes inevitable and that it offers a learning opportunity to improve.
Every day we have a choice, we can let the fear of failure stop us from growing and achieving our goals, or we can live life on our own terms.
Each day is a psychological battle between worry, lack of confidence and fear of failure. Even the greatest people doubt themselves from time to time. Beat that self-doubt and believe in yourself every day, no one else will do it for you.
Failure beats losers and failure motivates winners. You will never be successful or wealthy if you do not take some big risks in life. When you take a risk, you can either fail hard or succeed more than you could ever dream. But if you constantly play it safe and never welcome change, you’ll always stay in the same place.
